Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State is set to embark on a one-month leave, during which his deputy, Barrister Bayo Lawal, will serve as acting governor.
The decision followed a resolution of the Oyo State House of Assembly during plenary on Monday, after lawmakers read and considered the governor’s formal letter requesting legislative approval to proceed on vacation.
In the letter, Governor Makinde informed the Assembly of his intention to be away for official rest and personal engagements, assuring that his deputy would oversee the affairs of the state in his absence.
Speaker of the Assembly, Rt. Hon. Adebo Ogundoyin, read the letter before members and subsequently called for their approval. The legislators unanimously endorsed the request and formally recognized Lawal as acting governor.
>By this resolution, Barrister Bayo Lawal shall henceforth assume all constitutional roles and responsibilities as acting governor until Governor Seyi Makinde returns from his leave,” Ogundoyin declared.
This is not the first time Governor Makinde has handed over to his deputy. Political observers say the move reflects a cordial working relationship between the governor and Lawal, who replaced the late Rauf Olaniyan as deputy governor in 2022.
The Assembly urged the acting governor to continue with the administration’s development agenda and ensure the smooth running of government while Governor Makinde is away.
The governor is expected to resume duties after the one-month leave.
