The Ekiti State Government has disbursed the sum of N2 billion to no fewer than 800 retirees under its pension payment scheme, in a move aimed at easing the financial burden of senior citizens who served the state diligently.
Governor Biodun Oyebanji, who announced the payment during a ceremony in Ado-Ekiti on Monday, said the gesture reflected his administration’s commitment to the welfare of pensioners and public servants. He noted that the funds were released to clear part of the accumulated gratuities owed to retirees from both state and local government service.
Oyebanji explained that the latest payment was part of a continuous process to offset the backlog of entitlements inherited from previous administrations. He reassured retirees that his government would sustain the initiative until all outstanding gratuities were settled.
We recognise the years of meritorious service our retirees rendered to Ekiti State. It is only fair that we show appreciation by ensuring they enjoy their retirement in dignity.”
He added that the state had adopted a structured and transparent payment plan, with periodic releases of funds to ensure equity and fairness in the process.
The Head of Service, Mr. Bamidele Agbede, commended the governor for prioritising the welfare of pensioners despite limited resources. He noted that the payment would bring relief to many elderly citizens facing economic hardship.
Also speaking, the Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP), Ekiti State chapter, Elder Joel Akinola, lauded the government’s consistency in the disbursement of gratuities. He urged the beneficiaries to make prudent use of the funds and continue to support the government’s reform agenda.
Some of the beneficiaries who spoke at the event expressed gratitude to the state government, describing the payment as timely, especially amid the rising cost of living.
The Oyebanji administration has so far disbursed over N6 billion in gratuities and pensions since its inception, reaffirming its focus on social welfare and inclusiveness.
