Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has offered automatic lecturing appointments to all first-class graduates of Abia State University, Uturu as graduate assistants, in a move aimed at rewarding academic excellence and strengthening the state’s education sector.
Otti announced the development on Friday during the institution’s 30th to 32nd combined convocation ceremony, drawing loud applause from graduating students, parents, and members of the academic community who attended the event. The governor also approved postgraduate scholarships up to doctoral level for all first-class graduates from the affected sets, a decision widely described as a landmark intervention in higher education development in the state.
“I am glad to announce that approval has been given to the university management to immediately commence the process of retaining all first-class graduates as graduate assistants, subject to the completion of their National Youth Service,” the governor said.
The announcement formed part of the state government’s broader strategy to reposition Abia’s education sector by investing in human capital, research, and academic development.
