The Osun State Police Command has granted administrative bail to the Commissioner for Environment, Mr. Mayowa Anjorin, following his detention over a violent campaign shooting in Ilesa.
Confirming the release on Sunday, August 9, 2026, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) for the command, DSP Abiodun Ojelabi, noted that while the commissioner has been allowed to leave, the primary suspect remains in police custody as investigations intensify.
“The commissioner was released on bail at about 1:00 p.m. today,” DSP Ojelabi stated. “However, the suspect arrested with the pump-action gun, an operative of the Amotekun corps is still in our custody, and the weapon remains impounded. Investigation into the incident is far from over.”
The arrest originated from a chaotic outbreak of violence that unfolded around 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, August 8, 2026, in the Isokun area of Ilesa. A political procession organized by members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) was making its way to the party secretariat following a rally when gunfire suddenly erupted.
Armed men traveling in a Lexus SUV with registration number ABJ-89TS some allegedly wearing Osun State Security Network Agency (Amotekun) uniforms intercepted the procession and opened fire.
Three parade participants, identified as Tobi Ilesanmi, Wasiu Alanide, and Aderemi Adedeji, sustained severe gunshot wounds and were rushed to a regional hospital for emergency treatment.
Angry crowd members pursued the fleeing vehicle. Operatives from the Force Intelligence Department–Intelligence Response Team (FID-IRT) mobilized quickly to neutralize the situation, intercepting the vehicle and apprehending an Amotekun operative, Odeyemi Abimbola, alongside a recovered pump-action shotgun.
Mr. Anjorin, who was traveling inside the intercepted vehicle at the time of the incident, was taken into custody alongside Abimbola and transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Osogbo for questioning.
The Command emphasized that granting bail to the cabinet member is standard administrative procedure during an active inquiry and does not clear any involved parties of potential charges.
DSP Ojelabi reassured the public that detectives are actively following leads to determine the full chain of events, hold accountable anyone found culpable, and prevent further political violence across Osun State.
