The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) will launch online voter pre-registration on August 18, 2025, to streamline voter registration ahead of off-cycle governorship elections and the 2027 general elections. INEC Chairman Prof. Mahmood Yakubu announced the initiative during a press briefing in Abuja on August 1, 2025, stating that the portal, accessible via cvr.inecnigeria.org, allows eligible Nigerians aged 18 and above, as well as those updating or transferring voter details, to submit information remotely, reducing congestion at physical centers. In-person registration to complete biometrics will begin on August 25, 2025, at INEC offices and designated centers nationwide. Yakubu emphasized robust cybersecurity measures to protect user data, urging citizens to register for credible elections.

The initiative targets new voters, those with lost or damaged Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs), and individuals needing to update personal details or transfer voting locations. INEC’s Resident Electoral Commissioner in Kebbi, Abubakar Sarkin-Pawa-Dambo, warned against underage or multiple registrations, stating that the commission will enforce strict compliance starting August 18. The exercise follows INEC’s recent distribution of over 1.2 million uncollected PVCs and aligns with preparations for the Anambra governorship election on November 8, 2025, and the FCT Area Council election on February 21, 2026.
