Ondo State Governor, Dr Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, has granted the prerogative of mercy to 77 convicted prisoners across correctional centres in the state to mark the 2026 New Year.
The decision follows recommendations by the Ondo State Advisory Council on Prerogative of Mercy and includes releases, sentence reductions, and commutations of death sentences.

The use of executive clemency is seen by justice reform advocates as one way to decongest prisons while offering rehabilitated inmates a chance to reintegrate into society.
How the decision was made
The Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Dr Kayode Ajulo, SAN, who chairs the Advisory Council, said the process was rigorous and evidence-based.
“In commemoration of the January 1st, 2026 New Year Day celebration, the State Advisory Council on Prerogative of Mercy recommended a total of 77 convicts for the mercy of Mr. Governor,” he said.
“In so doing, the Council considered the nature of offence, length of time served, conduct and behavior in custody, age and health condition, rehabilitation and prospects of reintegration and reports from correctional and legal authorities.”
Who benefits
According to the breakdown released by the state government, the clemency covers different categories of inmates.
Twelve convicts were granted outright release after serving substantial parts of their sentences and demonstrating good conduct.
Twenty-two inmates on death row had their sentences commuted to life imprisonment or fixed jail terms.
Four inmates serving life sentences had their terms reduced to 25 years.
Fourteen life sentences were reduced to 20 years, while 15 inmates received reductions to 15 years.
Six inmates had their life sentences reduced to 10 years, and four others received commutation to lesser jail terms.
Governor’s role
Dr Ajulo said Governor Aiyedatiwa personally reviewed the recommendations before approving them.
“After due consideration, Mr. Governor has graciously approved the list of beneficiaries,” he said.
The Attorney General added that the decision reflects a deliberate balance between justice and compassion.

The Ondo State Government says the clemency exercise forms part of broader justice sector reforms.
Officials say further steps will focus on prison decongestion, rehabilitation programmes, and improved correctional management across the state.
