The death of Mr. Dan Agbese, former editor- in-chief of the defunct News Watch magazine, has been described as a great loss to Nigeria’s media landscape. In a statement issued in Enugu, Mazi Omife Omife, former Publisher of the defunct Sports Globe magazines and Vice President of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, expressed his shock at the news, recalling Agbese’s vitality during their last meeting in Abuja.
“Dan Agbese was one of the finest journalists this country has ever produced,” Mazi Omife stated. “His writing style was unique, and his reports brought events to life. Alongside Dele Giwa, Ray Ekpu, and Yakubo Mohammed, he set a benchmark for journalism in Nigeria, providing insights that shaped public discourse.”
Mazi Omife, a former broadcaster with Anambra Television (ATV) Enugu in the eighties, stated that Agbese’s advice to him in 1994 when he Mazi Omife was made a consultant for the NUJ Press Week (held at Nike Lake Hotel) contributed to its success. “He mentored many journalists who now lead in the media industry. We thank God he lived to leave a legacy of excellence,” he said.
Agbese’s death underscores the inevitability of life’s end, yet his contributions to journalism are immortal. His dedication to truth, rigorous reporting, and narrative skill set a standard for future generations. The media community mourns his loss and calls for the Federal Government to honor his service to the nation.
