The First Lady of Nigeria, Oluremi Tinubu, has applauded the registration of 14 million Nigerian children over the past two years, describing it as a major milestone in safeguarding the identity and rights of every child in the country.
She gave the commendation in a post on her X handle on Monday after receiving the Country Representative of UNICEF in Nigeria, Ms. Wafaa Abdelatef, and her team. The delegation had briefed her last Friday on the progress made in birth registration efforts nationwide.
According to the First Lady, UNICEF announced during the meeting that “in the past two years, the number of children whose births have been officially registered in Nigeria has risen significantly to 14 million.”
She described the development as a reflection of a shared resolve to protect children’s rights and ensure that every Nigerian child is recognised by law.
“This remarkable achievement reflects our collective commitment to safeguarding the identity and rights of every Nigerian child,” Tinubu stated.
The First Lady also expressed appreciation to development partners, the 36 State First Ladies, and other stakeholders for their sustained dedication to advancing birth registration and child welfare initiatives across the country.
Birth registration is considered a critical step in securing access to education, healthcare, and social services, as well as in strengthening national data systems and planning. The latest figures signal progress in ongoing efforts to close registration gaps and promote inclusive development nationwide.
