Renowned Nigerian author Olubunmi Oluranti Familoni has made literary history by winning the prestigious 2024 Nigeria Prize for Literature for his captivating book, “The Road Does Not End.”
The award, which is organized by Nigeria LNG (NLNG), is the most esteemed literary accolade in the country and this year focused specifically on children’s literature. Familoni triumphed over two formidable contenders, securing a grand prize of $100,000.
The announcement of Familoni’s victory was made by Professor Akachi Ezeigbo, Chairperson of the Advisory Board, during a grand ceremony held on Friday, October 11, 2024, at the luxurious Eko Hotel and Suites in Victoria Island, Lagos.
Familoni’s book was up against two other exceptional works: “A Father’s Pride” by Ndidi Chiazor-Enenmo and “Wish Maker” by Uchechukwu Peter Umezurike. Ultimately, Familoni’s masterpiece stood out for its language, technical prowess, and poignant themes.
In her remarks, Professor Ezeigbo explained why “The Road Does Not End” resonated with the judges, highlighting its critical examination of child labor.
“The book explores themes of resilience and human connection, emphasizing the importance of relationships and the need for continuous self-improvement,” she stated.
The Advisory Board praised Familoni’s meticulous editing and the sensitive handling of such a vital topic, reaffirming the power of literature in shaping young minds.
Familoni’s victory underscores the significant role literature plays in addressing pressing societal issues, particularly those affecting children.
Professor Ezeigbo noted, “The impact this prize has on young Nigerians cannot be overstated,” commending NLNG for fostering a platform that celebrates literary excellence and supports emerging writers.
In his heartfelt acceptance speech, Familoni expressed deep gratitude for the opportunity provided by NLNG through the award. “I commend the NLNG for creating this annual Prize, which has elevated literature and empowered many writers,” he remarked.
The 2024 judging panel, led by Professor Saleh Abdu from the Federal University of Kashere, included esteemed literary professionals Professor Vicky Sylvester and Dr. Osarobu Igudia. Their unanimous decision to award Familoni reflects the book’s depth, its appeal to younger audiences, and its societal relevance.

The Nigeria Prize for Literature alternates yearly among four genres: prose fiction, poetry, drama, and children’s literature, emphasizing the crucial role that literature plays in educating and inspiring future generations.
