Ohanaeze Ndigbo’s Lagos State chapter president, Dr. Solomon Ogbonna Aguene, has accused the Lagos authorities of systematically disenfranchising Igbo residents during the ongoing local government elections. Speaking from his Ikoyi residence on Saturday, July 12, Aguene alleged that many Igbos across Lagos were denied the right to vote or to contest council seats, and that this exclusion is a recurring feature of every election cycle in the state, despite their significant economic and social contributions.
Aguene described the situation as a perversion of democratic principles, saying: “Do you know that the Igbo that are resident in Lagos state are denied the opportunity to vote? This is not just happening in this election; it occurs during every cycle.” He added that although a few Igbos hold vice-chair positions, leadership roles remain largely inaccessible to the community, underscoring the need for equity and inclusion in local governance.
