A member of the Ogun State House of Assembly representing Ijebu North Constituency I, Rasheed Kashamu, has defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Kashamu announced his defection on Monday during plenary, attributing his decision to what he described as irreconcilable differences and deep divisions that have continued to polarise the opposition party at both the state and national levels.
The Speaker of the House, Oludaisi Elemide, read Kashamu’s letter on the floor of the Assembly, in which the lawmaker formally notified the House of his resignation from the PDP and his decision to align with the APC.
According to the letter, Kashamu said persistent factional disputes at the national level of the PDP, coupled with leadership tussles within the party in Ogun State, had made it increasingly difficult for him to effectively function and pursue the interests of his constituents on the platform of the party.
The Speaker subsequently acknowledged the defection and noted that the House had taken official notice of the lawmaker’s change of party affiliation.
Kashamu’s defection further reduces the strength of the PDP in the Ogun State House of Assembly, while boosting the numerical advantage of the ruling APC in the legislative chamber.
