The Ogun State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has ratified the suspension of former governor and serving senator, Otunba Gbenga Daniel, over alleged anti-party activities.
Daniel, who represents Ogun East Senatorial District at the National Assembly, was accused by his ward leadership of working against the party’s interests during recent political activities in the state.
In a communiqué issued after its executive meeting in Abeokuta on Tuesday, the Ogun APC said it carefully reviewed the petition and findings from Daniel’s ward and local government, before upholding the decision to suspend him.
The statement, signed by the State Publicity Secretary, Tunde Oladunjoye, noted that the action became necessary to “protect the integrity and unity of the party,” stressing that no member, regardless of status, is above party discipline.
After due consideration of the allegations and reports from the ward and local government chapters, the State Executive Committee has ratified the suspension of Otunba Gbenga Daniel from the All Progressives Congress pending further investigations,” the statement read.
Party sources allege that Daniel was involved in fraternizing with opposition elements and failed to mobilize support for APC candidates during the last by-elections in Ogun State.
Meanwhile, the suspension has generated mixed reactions among party members, with some describing it as a bold step to enforce discipline, while others view it as a politically motivated move targeted at silencing dissenting voices.
Daniel, a former governor of Ogun State between 2003 and 2011, is yet to officially respond to the suspension as at the time of filing this report.
