The Obidient Movement has strongly rejected comments by former senator Dino Melaye suggesting that the Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 election, Peter Obi, lacks the capacity to unite Nigeria.
In a statement released on Friday in Abuja, the National Coordinator of the movement, Yunusa Tanko, said Melaye’s remarks were a clear misinterpretation of the prevailing political sentiment among Nigerians, who he said were increasingly calling for a new kind of leadership rooted in accountability, competence, and national inclusion.
Tanko maintained that Obi, a former governor of Anambra State, remains one of the most credible political figures capable of fostering unity and rebuilding trust among the diverse groups that make up the country.
Melaye had earlier described Obi as a “fantastic Nigerian” and a “great man,” but argued that the former governor lacked the capacity to unify the country. The former lawmaker also reportedly stated that the presidency was “not his time.”
However, the Obidient Movement said such a position failed to reflect the political realities across the nation, particularly the widespread support Obi received during the 2023 general elections.
According to the group, Obi’s campaign transcended traditional political divides and inspired a new generation of Nigerians who had previously shown little interest in the political process.
Tanko noted that Obi’s message of transparency, prudent management of public resources, and people-focused governance resonated with millions of Nigerians across ethnic, religious, and regional lines.
He added that the surge of support witnessed during the 2023 elections demonstrated the growing desire among citizens for leaders who prioritize national development over partisan interests.
The movement further argued that Obi’s political record, especially his tenure as governor of Anambra State, reflects a leadership style capable of bridging divides and promoting national cohesion.
Tanko said the former governor’s emphasis on fiscal discipline, investment in education, and institutional reforms had earned him respect across political and social boundaries.
He also stressed that the Obidient Movement would continue to advocate for political accountability and reforms aimed at strengthening democracy in Nigeria.
The statement urged political actors to focus on constructive engagement rather than making statements that could undermine the collective aspirations of Nigerians seeking a more inclusive political system.
Tanko emphasized that the movement remains committed to supporting leaders who demonstrate integrity, competence, and the willingness to place the nation’s interests above personal or partisan considerations.
He said the growing momentum behind Obi’s political philosophy indicates that many Nigerians are ready for a shift in leadership style that prioritizes transparency, economic revival, and national unity.
The group therefore called on Nigerians to remain focused on the broader goal of building a country where governance is driven by the needs and aspirations of the people rather than narrow political calculations.
