The presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 general election, Peter Obi, has raised fresh concerns over the difficulties faced by candidates seeking to register for the 2026 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination in Amawbia, Awka South Local Government Area of Anambra State.
Obi, in a statement shared via his X handle on Monday, lamented the hardship experienced by students at the Amawbia office of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, describing the situation as a repeat of last year’s challenges.
He recalled that in 2025, concerns were raised about the suffering endured by candidates at various centres nationwide, particularly at the Amawbia office in Anambra State, following the proscription of several Computer-Based Test centres over alleged infractions.
“Last year, concerns were raised about the hardship students faced at various centres across the country, particularly at the Amawbia, Anambra State, office of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, following the proscription of several CBT centres over alleged infractions,” Obi stated.
According to him, there had been expectations that corrective measures would be implemented to prevent a recurrence. However, he expressed disappointment that the same issues persist.
“The expectation was that corrective measures would follow. Sadly, as I passed there again last Friday, I met the same crowd and confusion. Upon further inquiry, I was informed that similar situations exist in some other states across Nigeria,” he added.
Obi stressed the need for urgent intervention to ease the registration process for candidates, noting that many young Nigerians seeking admission into tertiary institutions should not be subjected to avoidable stress and uncertainty.
He called on relevant authorities to address the logistical and administrative bottlenecks to ensure a smooth and transparent registration exercise nationwide.
