Lagos State House of Assembly Speaker, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, has shed light on his political future as his tenure gradually winds down.
Speaking at a media parley in Ikeja on Thursday, Obasa said his years of legislative experience and service to Lagosians have adequately prepared him for higher responsibilities, even as he insisted that his next step would be guided by divine direction and the will of the people.
“I have been privileged to serve Lagos as Speaker for several terms. It has been a journey of service, sacrifice, and leadership. Beyond here, I believe in continuity of service, whether in legislative, executive, or national assignments,” Obasa said.
While he declined to give specifics on whether he would contest for a senatorial or governorship position in the coming elections, Obasa hinted that consultation with stakeholders across Lagos and beyond was ongoing.
“I am a party man. My ambition is tied to the interest of my people and the direction of our great party. Whatever step I take after the speakership will align with the vision of progressive leadership and the call of service,” he added.
Political analysts note that Obasa, one of the longest-serving Speakers in Nigeria’s democratic history, has built a strong network within Lagos politics, making him a potential contender for key positions at the state or national level.
Some of his close associates have hinted at a likely senatorial bid in Lagos West, though the Speaker has neither confirmed nor denied this.
For now, Obasa says his focus remains on steering the Lagos Assembly to pass people-oriented laws, strengthen oversight functions, and maintain its relevance as a model legislature in Nigeria.
