The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has urged employers to fund transportation and accommodation for corps members to enhance their welfare and productivity during their service year. Speaking at the 2025 NYSC/Corps Employers’ Workshop in Bauchi on July 24, 2025, Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, NYSC Director General, emphasized that employers should either provide direct transport from orientation camps or reimburse travel costs, alongside offering comfortable accommodation or equivalent allowances. Represented by Agatha Banki, Director of the Northeast Area Office 1, Nafiu stressed that such support is critical for corps members’ dedication.
The call, echoed at a similar workshop in Minna, Niger State, on July 3, 2025, by Acting Director Mrs. Ikupolati Esther Tosin, highlighted deficiencies in corps welfare, particularly in Niger, where accommodation and stipends are often lacking. Nafiu also warned against employers aiding corps members in evading their Places of Primary Assignment, urging compliance with NYSC expectations like healthcare access and safe work environments. “Strengthening our partnership is a necessity for fostering empowerment and social responsibility,” said Bauchi State NYSC Coordinator Umoren Kufre, underscoring the workshop’s role in improving collaboration.
