The royal family of Eze Nwosu Nwafor of Ajalli, Orumba North LGA of Anambra State, has released the arrangements for the burial of their son, Professor Humphrey Nwobu Nwosu, the late Chairman of the defunct National Electoral Commission (NEC), now Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), who died on October 24 last year, aged 83.
According to the release, Prof. Nwosu, the acclaimed hero of the epochal June 12, 1993 presidential election, who scaled all landmines placed in the way of that election by the military leaders at the time, to conduct Nigeria’s freest, fairest and most transparent election to date, will be buried on Friday, March 28 at his residence, Ogbiti Otti Palace, Ajalli, Orumba North LGA, Anambra State.
However, the obsequies will begin this Saturday, March 1, with ‘service of songs and celebration of life’ at the Nigerian Embassy, Washington DC, USA at 3pm, Washington time.
From the United States, the funeral rites will move down to Nigeria for ‘a Night of Tributes’ on Tuesday, March 25 at the Yar’Adua Centre, Abuja, the FCT, at 5pm.
There will be a service of songs on Wednesday, March 26, by the Knights of St. Paul at his Ogbiti Otti Palace home, Ajalli, at 3pm, according to the funeral arrangement.
Similarly, Thursday, March 27 has been slated for the arrival of his body for a brief ceremony at the Headquarters of Orumba North LGA, Ajalli at 12 noon, to be followed by another service of songs at his Ogbiti Otti Place home, Ajalli at 5pm.
According to the funeral announcement signed by Engr. Nnaemeka Humphrey Nwosu for the family, the funeral rites of the late professor of political science will climax on Friday, March 28 with lying-in-state at his Ogbiti Otti Palace home, Ajalli, between 7am and 9am.
That will be followed by the funeral service at St. Mark’s Anglican Church, Ajalli, at 10 am and internment shortly after at his Ogbiti Otti Palace home, Ajalli, Orumba North LGA, Anambra State, Engr. Nwosu stated.
Wishing the late Professor Nwosu eternal rest in the Lord’s bosom, Engineer Nwosu further announced that guests would be entertained, shortly interment, at the Ajalli Government School Field, Ajalli, Orumba North LGA, Anambra State.
The late Professor Nwosu has been described by many as the ‘authentic’ hero of the June 12, 1993 presidential election, having conducted the freest and most credible presidential election in Nigerian political history.
However, it would appear that every major official pronouncement on that watershed of an election, either by way or commendation or credits given, has passed him by.
When in 2020 former President Muhammadu Buhari declared June 12 a Democracy Day, a little away from the former May 29, and apologised to the nation and, in particular, the late MKO Abiola, acclaimed winner of the presidential election’s family for the injustice of the inexplicable annulment of that election, no mention was made of the the man who made June 12 possible, moving, as been widely reported, against all odds.
