​During a press conference held on Tuesday, August 11, 2026, at the NUT Municipal Branch Headquarters in Area 1, Garki, Abuja, leadership representing public school educators called for swift government intervention to reclaim property designated for teachers’ welfare housing.
​The union revealed that housing plots allocated across strategic locations in the Federal Capital Territory are currently being overtaken by unauthorized private developers, property speculators, and commercial syndicates.
​Speaking at the briefing, Comrade Folarin Kehinde, Chairman of the NUT Municipal Branch, addressed reporters on the severe setback the land encroachment poses to the local teaching force.
​”Educators across the FCT have dedicated decades of public service to shaping the nation’s youth, with many allocating their limited savings towards secure housing schemes,” Comrade Kehinde remarked. “Allowing land legally acquired for teachers to be brazenly seized by unauthorized developers is unacceptable. We are calling on Honourable Minister Nyesom Wike to exercise his executive authority to restore our land allocations and launch a full inquiry to hold the perpetrators accountable.”
​The union noted that administrative delays and lack of perimeter infrastructure have made the estate grounds vulnerable to illegal land grabbing and illegal resale schemes.
​Reinforcing the union’s position, Branch Secretary Comrade Margaret Jethro highlighted that previous appeals through local municipal departments had failed to stop trespassers, making direct action from the FCT Administration necessary.
​The NUT Municipal Branch outlined three major demands to the FCT Minister which includes Immediate enforcement by the Department of Development Control to clear illegal structures erected on teachers’ estate properties.
A comprehensive investigation involving land registry authorities and law enforcement to expose and prosecute those involved in the fraudulent transactions and a provision of official survey demarcations and basic infrastructure support to safeguard the sites against future encroachment once reclaimed.
​The appeal arrives during an ongoing campaign by the FCT Administration to enforce urban master plans and curb unapproved land development across Abuja. Representatives from the Federal Capital Territory Administration acknowledged receiving the union’s formal petition, with an official administrative review currently underway.
