The Ibadan Branch of the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE) has urged professional engineers across the country to leverage technological innovation to strengthen national security, safeguard critical infrastructure, and drive sustainable development in Nigeria.

Speaking during a press conference in Ibadan to launch activities for the branch’s 2026 Engineering Week, Chairman Ayokunnu Ojedele stated that the event’s theme which is “Engineering Innovation for National Security, Critical Infrastructure Protection and Sustainable Development in Nigeria”, was chosen to directly target the country’s most urgent security and economic priorities.

Ojedele emphasized that engineers must lead the deployment of technical solutions capable of securing national assets and improving the standard of living for citizens.

Highlighting capacity building, Ojedele announced that the branch is prioritizing early-career professionals through its Young Engineers Programme, themed “Empowering Young Engineers for Innovation, Leadership and Sustainable Development.” He noted that the survival and progression of Nigeria’s engineering sector depend heavily on equipping younger talent with practical competencies in emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), Industry 4.0, smart infrastructure, and renewable energy systems.

To bridge the longstanding gap between academic training and industry practice, the NSE Ibadan Branch revealed plans to collaborate with corporate partners to organize technical seminars for student and graduate members. Ojedele reiterated that Nigerian engineers must evolve into proactive problem-solvers, ethical leaders, and tech-driven innovators to ensure the nation adapts successfully to rapid global technological shifts.
