The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has commenced the recertification process for the Lagos Rail Mass Transit Red Line, marking a major step toward securing a full operational license for the urban rail corridor and strengthening rail-based transportation in Lagos.
The recertification exercise follows the earlier issuance of a one-year provisional license for the rail line and is aimed at transitioning the corridor to a substantive approval status that will allow for full commercial operations under established national rail standards.
As part of the process, a high-level delegation from the NRC carried out an extensive inspection of critical infrastructure along the corridor, including visits to the Oyingbo and Ikeja stations, where they evaluated operational standards, safety systems, passenger facilities, and overall service readiness.
The NRC delegation was led by the Head of Business Process Efficiency and Due Diligence, Oyekunle Oyewole. Other members of the inspection team included the Deputy Director of Operations, Adegoke Omojola, and Assistant Director of Legal Services, N. N. Nnorom.
During the inspection tour, the NRC team assessed key components of the rail system, including track infrastructure, signaling systems, station facilities, safety procedures, and operational control systems. The recertification process is designed to ensure that the rail line meets national safety and operational standards before a full operational license is granted.
The NRC delegation was received by officials of the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) rail team, including the Head of Rail Operations, Joseph Akinpelu, alongside Akinwale Akintola and Olufemi Odusina.
Officials from LAMATA conducted the NRC team around the stations and other key infrastructure, providing technical briefings and operational updates on the performance of the rail line since it began operations under the provisional license.
The Lagos Red Line is one of the major rail projects designed to improve mass transit in Lagos, reduce traffic congestion, and provide a safer and more efficient transportation alternative for residents of the state. The rail line connects several densely populated areas and is expected to significantly improve mobility for commuters traveling between the mainland and other parts of the city.
