Norway’s King Harald V, Europe’s oldest reigning monarch who served as a unifying figure and modernizer of the nation’s crown for over three decades, died peacefully on Friday morning, August 28, 2026, the Royal Court announced. He was 89 years old.
According to an official press statement released by the Royal Household, the monarch passed away at 6:35 a.m. local time (04:35 GMT) at Oslo University Hospital (Rikshospitalet).
King Harald had been admitted to the hospital on August 17 to undergo medical treatment for hemolytic anemia and a subsequent bloodstream bacterial infection.
”It is with deep grief that we announce that His Majesty King Harald has passed away,” the Royal Court stated in an official announcement released Friday morning. Shortly after the release, the royal standard flying above the Royal Palace in central Oslo was lowered to half-mast.
Addressing the public following the palace statement, Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre expressed profound sorrow on behalf of the government and the Norwegian people.
”A whole nation is in mourning,” Prime Minister Støre declared. “For more than three decades as monarch, Harald V demonstrated an unwavering faith in the Norwegian people. He helped us to see the best in ourselves — and in one another.”
In accordance with Article 6 of the Norwegian Constitution, succession takes place immediately upon the death of the sovereign. King Harald’s 53-year-old son, Crown Prince Haakon, has automatically acceded to the throne as Norway’s new king.
Under Norwegian constitutional rules, the new monarch will meet with the government in an extraordinary Council of State at the Royal Palace and swear an oath before the Storting (Norway’s parliament). Norway does not hold traditional coronation ceremonies.
King Harald V ascended the throne on January 17, 1991, succeeding his father, King Olav V. Over his 35-year reign, he earned widespread respect for his warmth, inclusive values, and commitment to modernizing the monarchy.
Funeral arrangements and details regarding the national period of mourning are expected to be announced by the Royal Palace in the coming hours.
