The All Progressives Congress (APC) in the North Central zone has thrown its weight behind President Bola Ahmed Tinubu over the recent appointment of Prof. Joash Amupitan as the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
In a statement released on Saturday after an emergency meeting in Abuja, the party’s zonal leaders described Amupitan’s appointment as a demonstration of President Tinubu’s commitment to merit, competence, and regional inclusion.
The statement, signed by the APC North Central Zonal Chairman, Hon. Muazu Bawa, commended the President for recognizing the North Central’s contribution to the nation’s democratic development and governance.
Prof. Joash Amupitan’s appointment is a reward for excellence and integrity. The North Central is grateful to President Tinubu for entrusting this crucial national responsibility to one of our own,” the statement read.
The party noted that Amupitan, a respected legal scholar and former university administrator, has the experience and character required to reform and strengthen Nigeria’s electoral process.
It further urged Nigerians, especially political stakeholders, to support the new INEC chairman in his mission to enhance transparency and credibility in future elections.

The North Central APC also called on other zones to emulate the spirit of unity and cooperation, emphasizing that the success of President Tinubu’s administration depends on collective support from all regions.
President Tinubu had earlier announced Amupitan’s appointment following the retirement of Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, who served as INEC chairman from 2015 to 2025.
Amupitan’s appointment has continued to generate mixed reactions across the country, with several political and civil society groups urging him to prioritize electoral reforms and restore public trust in the Commission.
