The National Orientation Agency ( NOA) has carried out an enlightenment campaign against the outbreak of a new epidemic known as Human Metapneumovorus – 2025 .
In a statement signed by the State Director of the Agency, Mr Mkpoutom Mkpoutom and made available to journalists in Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State capital, NOA listed symptoms of the disease to include cough, fever, nasal congestion, sore throat, shortness of breath and wheezing in severe cases.
“Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) is a respiratory virus causing flu-like symptoms, particularly affecting children, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems,” the statement read, in part.
“Symptoms: Cough, fever, nasal congestion, sore throat, shortness of breath; wheezing in severe cases.
“In children: potential for bronchiolitis or pneumonia
“In adults: can exacerbate chronic conditions like asthma to mention but a few.”
Mkpoutom further explained that the epidemic transmits through respiratory droplets from coughing or sneezing as well from direct contact with contaminated surfaces .
Mkpoutom identified vulnerable groups for the sickness to include children under 5 years old and elderly persons especially those with underlying health conditions and those lacking immunity.
“We wish to use this medium in line with our mandate to advise citizens to always use nose masks, especially in crowded places, airport premises, practising good hand hygiene, avoiding close contact with sick persons, ensuring vaccinations for other preventable respiratory diseases like influenza and COVID19.
“However, there is no known cure for HMPV. Let us observe the NCDC protocol as directed recently as NOA will continue to create the necessary awareness in all the LGAs of Akwa Ibom State’s rural communities,” he surmised.
