The 2026 edition of the Nigeria Prize for Literature has officially moved into its adjudication phase following the formal handover of 223 poetry entries by Nigeria LNG Limited to the Advisory Board and panel of judges in Lagos.
The handover, which took place on April 20, marks the commencement of a rigorous evaluation process that will culminate in the selection of this year’s winner of the prestigious $100,000 prize widely regarded as one of Africa’s most significant literary honours.
Representing the General Manager, External Relations and Sustainable Development at NLNG, Dr. Sophia Horsfall, Abdul Umar described the moment as the beginning of a critical process requiring “attention, patience, and sound judgement.”
He noted that this year’s focus on poetry brings heightened expectations, given the genre’s demand for precision, depth, and clarity. According to him, poetry remains one of the most exacting literary forms, where “a single line can define an entire work.”
The current cycle follows the benchmark set in 2022, when Romeo Oriogun won the prize for his acclaimed collection Nomad, a work that continues to resonate within contemporary Nigerian literature.
Commitment to Literary Excellence
NLNG reiterated its commitment to sustaining a credible platform that promotes literary excellence and fosters national development through the arts.
“The credibility of the Prize rests on the integrity of its process and the quality of works it attracts,” Horsfall stated, adding that the initiative has significantly contributed to strengthening reading culture, encouraging disciplined writing, and expanding Nigeria’s literary ecosystem.
She further highlighted the broader cultural impact of the Prize, noting that it consistently sparks national conversations, critical reflection, and intellectual engagement beyond the literary community.
Rigorous Selection Process
The adjudication process will involve months of detailed reading and evaluation, leading to the announcement of a longlist of 11 entries, a shortlist of three, and ultimately, the winning work later in the year.
Receiving the submissions, Chairman of the Advisory Board, Professor Akachi Adimora-Ezeigbo, emphasised the importance of maintaining the Prize’s long-standing standards of fairness, independence, and excellence.
She assured stakeholders that each entry would undergo thorough and unbiased scrutiny, noting that the Prize’s credibility has been built on a consistent, merit-based adjudication framework.
“Every line in a poem must justify its presence. There is little room for excess, which makes poetry one of the most demanding literary forms,” she said, underscoring the complexity of this year’s genre.
Beyond Prize Money
Prof. Adimora-Ezeigbo stressed that the significance of the Prize extends beyond its monetary value, explaining that the winning work often becomes a benchmark that shapes literary discourse and influences emerging writers across Africa.
She also commended participating writers, noting that their contributions sustain the vibrancy and intellectual depth of Nigeria’s literary space.

In her closing remarks, NLNG’s Manager, Corporate Communication and Public Affairs, Anne-Marie Palmer-Ikuku, reaffirmed the organisation’s dedication to maintaining the integrity and reputation of the Prize.
She acknowledged the role of the media in amplifying literary voices and sustaining public engagement with the Prize, describing their contribution as essential to extending its impact beyond the adjudication process.
With the formal handover concluded, attention now turns to the judges, whose deliberations over the coming months will determine the work that defines the 2026 cycle. The winner is expected to be unveiled at a grand award ceremony later in October.
