The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has forecast heavy thunderstorms and rainfall across several parts of the country over the next three days, urging the public to take precautionary measures against possible flooding and other weather-related hazards.
According to a weather advisory released by NiMet on Monday, the rain-bearing systems are expected to cover both northern and southern regions, with varying intensity. The agency warned that low-lying communities, motorists, and air travelers should exercise caution as the heavy downpour may lead to reduced visibility, waterlogging, and potential disruption of movement.
“Thunderstorms are likely in states across the North-Central, including Abuja, Nasarawa, Niger, Kogi, and Benue. Similar weather conditions are expected in parts of the North-West, particularly Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, and Sokoto,” the statement read.
NiMet further noted that the South-Western states such as Lagos, Ogun, Ondo, and Ekiti, alongside the South-South axis including Rivers, Akwa Ibom, Cross River, and Bayelsa, will witness moderate to heavy rainfall during the forecast period. The South-East, covering Enugu, Anambra, Ebonyi, and Abia, is also expected to record consistent showers with thunderstorm activities.
The agency advised farmers, urban dwellers, and state emergency management agencies to remain vigilant. “We encourage local communities to clear drainages to minimize flooding, while individuals should avoid taking shelter under trees during thunderstorms due to risks of lightning strikes,” the statement added.
NiMet also cautioned against traveling on flooded roads and stressed the need for states and local governments to heighten flood preparedness plans, as the heavy rainfall could worsen existing cases of erosion and river overflows.
With the rainy season at its peak, NiMet assured Nigerians that it would continue to provide timely weather forecasts to safeguard lives and property.
