The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a flood alert for July, warning that Sokoto, Lagos, Edo, Benue, and 16 other states face potential flash flooding as the rainy season intensifies. Sokoto was flagged as “high risk,” while others like Kaduna, Zamfara, Yobe, Bauchi, Bayelsa, Jigawa, Adamawa, Taraba, Niger, Nasarawa, Ogun, Ondo, Delta, Cross River, Rivers, and Akwa Ibom were listed with varying exposure levels.
NiMet’s alert comes amid concerns that despite over ₦620 billion earmarked for ecological interventions, many affected states remain ill-prepared to handle rising flood threats. They urged residents to take proactive steps clearing drainage, preparing emergency kits, switching off utilities during heavy rain, and relocating if necessary to reduce the risk of damage and loss.
With the onset of peak rainfall in July, keeping ahead of nature’s impact will be crucial to protecting lives, homes, and infrastructure.
