Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has warned those angling to reduce Nigeria to a one-party state to shove it, because, according to him, Nigerians are not in favor of a one-party political system but desire alternatives to hold non-performing leaders accountable.
The Governor made this statement on Friday – yesterday, December 3 – when the National Working Committee (NWC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), paid him a visit to condole with him over the tragic loss of 35 children in a stampede and to introduce the party’s new National Secretary, Sunday Udeh-Okoye.
According to Makinde, Nigerians want the ability to remove ineffective leaders, which is only possible in a multi-party democracy.
“Nigerians do not want a one-party state. They want alternatives and the power to hold leaders accountable when they fail to deliver on promises. This commitment is crucial to ensuring our democracy thrives,” he said.
Reflecting on the tragic stampede, Makinde thanked the NWC members for their condolences and shared his decision to cancel his birthday celebration in mourning. He also highlighted the need for the PDP to remain united and adhere to the rule of law, referencing a court ruling on the party’s National Secretary position.
“The new National Secretary has emerged by court pronouncement, and I have always maintained that we must follow the rule of law,” Makinde said.
Looking ahead to 2025, Makinde described it as a pivotal year for the PDP as the party prepares for another convention.
Saying he was optimistic about unity in the former national ruling party with the emergence of a new National Secretary, the Oyo Governor added, “The NWC is united, and there is no faction within the party. This gives us a strong foundation to work toward the future.”
In his remarks, the new National Secretary, Sunday Udeh-Okoye, expressed condolences to the families affected by the Oyo stampede and praised Makinde for the expeditious and humane resolution of the crisis.
Reiterating the resolve of the PDP to remain a strong opposition party and work towards reclaiming power by 2027, Udeh-Okoye said: “As the new Secretary, my focus is on unity and cohesion within the PDP. Nigerians are waiting for us, and we are committed to delivering the good governance they deserve. By 2027, we will work to take over and give Nigerians the leadership they long for.”
