Today, September 2,2026,Nigerians from all walks of life will mark the 78th birthday of Dr Ernest Ndukwe, deservedly recognised as the “Architect of Nigeria’s Digital Revolution.”
Ndukwe, described by former President Olusegun Obasanjo as “a national treasure,” is a distinguished engineer, corporate leader, and former Executive Vice Chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC).
Born on September 2, 1948, his visionary governance and commitment to transparent market reform democratised telecom access across Nigeria and laid the bedrock for West Africa’s broader digital economy.
Appointed as the Executive Vice Chairman and CEO of the NCC in 2000, Dr. Ndukwe spearheaded the historic 2001 Digital Mobile License (DML) auction. Widely praised for its transparency, this single policy shift transformed Nigeria from a nation with under 400,000 active fixed landlines into one of the world’s fastest-growing mobile market ecosystems, expanding access to tens of millions of subscribers within a decade.
Following his transformative tenure at the NCC, Dr. Ndukwe currently serves as the Chairman of MTN Nigeria Communications Plc and holds key advisory and board positions with Openmedia Group, SystemSpecs, and Access Bank PLC.
As a globally recognized regulatory strategist, he served as the Pioneer Chairman of the West African Telecom Regulators Association (WATRA) and past Chairman of the Administrative Council of the African Telecommunications Union (ATU). He also co-chaired Nigeria’s Presidential Committee on Strategy and Roadmap for Universal Broadband Access.
His academic & mentorship contributions went beyond policy and corporate governance, Dr. Ndukwe has dedicated years to training future leaders as the Head of the Centre for Infrastructure Policy, Regulation and Advancement (CIPRA) at the Lagos Business School (LBS)
