Nigerian table tennis star Aruna Quadri suffered a straight-sets defeat to Sweden’s Truls Moregard at the 2025 WTT Yokohama tournament, as confirmed by reports from the event held on August 7, 2025, at the BUNTAI Infinity Arena.

The fifth-seeded Moregard dominated the men’s singles Round of 32 match, winning 3-0 (11-9, 11-9, 11-4) in just 18 minutes, advancing to the Round of 16 to face Japan’s Sora Matsushima. Quadri, Africa’s top-ranked player and a former world top-10 contender, struggled to find his rhythm, with his trademark forehand power neutralized by Moregard’s precise shot placement and relentless pace, marking an early exit from the tournament.

The loss comes as a setback for Quadri, who had returned to international action aiming to build on his recent reclaiming of the African No. 1 ranking and improve on his Round of 32 exit at the July 2025 United States Grand Smash. Moregard, leveraging the momentum ahead of the Europe Smash Sweden 2025 in his hometown of Malmö, capitalized on Quadri’s missed opportunities in the opening games, where close 11-9 scores slipped away, before sealing the match with a commanding 11-4 third set.

Quadri earned 15 ranking points and $4,500 for his participation but will now shift focus to upcoming events to regain form.
