The Nigerian Shippers’Council says it will continue to engage stakeholders, enforce compliance and advocate an efficient, transparent and competitive maritime industry.
Executive Secretary of the Council, Dr Pius Akutah stated this at a sensitization programme for stakeholders on the Online portal for the registration of Regulated Port Service Providers and Users held on Tuesday in Kaduna.
Represented by a Deputy Director at the Council, Mrs Adaba Hannah, the Executive Secretary explained that the implementation of the online registration portal represents a significant milestone in the Council’s journey towards digital transformation and enhanced trade facilitation.
He pointed out that “with the platform, stakeholders can seamlessly register their companies online without the need to physically visit any of the Council office, provided that the necessary documentation and payments are submitted”.
Dr Pius Akutah also highlighted the implementation of the International Cargo Tracking Note, (ICTN), which is a strategic initiative that enhances cargo visibility, improves revenue assurance and strengthen national security in trade operations.
He added that the registration of port service providers and users is a necessary component of the ICTN, as it provides a structured database of all industry operators, fostering accountability, efficiency and data-driven regulation.
Earlier, the Director North-west zone of the Council, Alhaji Ahmed Umar Yazah disclosed that the support of the stakeholders have manifested in the Council’s efforts towards an improved efficiency in port operations, leading to the recovery of over six billion naira from individuals and corporate shippers in Nigeria.
He noted that the Council had established six zonal co-ordinating offices in Aba, Bauchi, Ibadan, Jos, Kano and Port-Harcourt, and fourteen area offices nationwide for effective service delivery.
Alhaji Ahmed Umar Yazah added that through the registration, a detailed information about shippers would be captured, processed for seamless interactions and engagements.
