The Nigerian Legion has begun discussions with the Federal Ministry of Agriculture to secure subsidised farm inputs and implements for military veterans involved in agriculture.
The development was disclosed on Wednesday in Abuja during a medical outreach organised for veterans as part of activities marking the 2026 Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day. The initiative aims to support retired military personnel who have turned to farming as a source of livelihood after service.
Several veterans at the outreach expressed concern that the high cost of agricultural inputs was undermining their post-retirement economic activities. A retired Master Warrant Officer of the Nigerian Air Force, Mr Emmanuel Waniko, said he embraced farming after leaving the service, but rising prices of fertilisers, agro-chemicals, and machinery had made sustaining the venture increasingly challenging.
The Nigerian Legion stated that securing government support for veterans in agriculture is part of its broader mandate to ensure that former service members enjoy dignified post-service lives.
Officials said ongoing engagements with the Ministry of Agriculture aim to make essential farming resources more accessible and affordable, thereby boosting veterans’ productivity and income.
The outreach, which included free medical services, also underscored the government and military organisations’ commitment to the welfare of veterans, recognising their contributions to national security and development.
Veterans and organisers alike called for continued attention to post-retirement welfare, emphasising that support in agriculture, healthcare, and social services would help them lead meaningful lives after military service.
