Nigerian banks have mobilized over N500 million in cash and relief materials to assist victims of the devastating Mokwa floods that struck Niger State in late May, as part of a coordinated private sector response to what officials describe as one of the worst flood disasters in the region in recent years.
The banking sector intervention comes as the death toll from the disaster continues to mount, with officials confirming at least 206 people killed and 1,000 missing after heavy rainfall submerged the market town on May 28. The banking consortium’s donation joins a growing list of relief efforts following the catastrophic flooding that displaced more than 3,000 people, with over half being children aged 12 and under. Major financial institutions including GTBank, Zenith Bank, Access Bank, Citibank, Fidelity Bank, Unity Bank, and Standard Chartered are among those participating in the relief initiative, which includes both direct cash transfers and essential supplies for displaced families.
The coordinated banking sector response complements significant government relief efforts already underway. Niger State Governor Mohammed Umar Bago has donated N1 billion to support flood victims, while each of the 458 affected households will receive N1 million, along with 25 bags of assorted grains. The state has also begun disbursing these funds to affected families as part of an accelerated recovery program.
