The Federal Government has vowed to respond in kind to the United States’ recent decision to tighten visa regulations for Nigerian travelers, warning that the era of unilateral restrictions without consequences is over.
Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, disclosed this on Monday in Abuja while addressing journalists on the diplomatic implications of Washington’s latest move.
According to him, the new visa regime, which imposes stricter eligibility requirements and additional security checks on Nigerians seeking entry into the US, undermines long-standing bilateral relations between both countries.
“Nigeria values its relationship with the United States, but we cannot accept policies that unfairly target our citizens. We will not hesitate to apply reciprocal measures to ensure fairness and mutual respect,” Tuggar stated.
He stressed that Nigeria had always maintained an open-door policy for foreign nationals, including Americans, and would continue to do so only on the basis of equality.
The minister further explained that the Federal Government was studying the details of the US directive and would soon announce specific countermeasures. “Our response will be guided by diplomacy, but it will be firm and proportionate,” he added.
The development has sparked mixed reactions among Nigerians, particularly students, business travelers, and professionals who frequently seek US visas. While some expressed concern that the tightening rules could limit opportunities, others welcomed the government’s tough stance, saying reciprocity was necessary in international relations.
Analysts believe the row may test the strength of Nigeria–US cooperation in areas such as trade, counterterrorism, and governance support, unless both parties quickly resolve the matter through dialogue.
