The Minister of Defence, Gen. Christopher Musa, has reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to international humanitarian law and globally accepted human rights standards in all military operations.
Musa gave the assurance during a diplomatic visit by the United Nations Assistant Secretary-General and Victims’ Rights Advocate, Najla Palma, and her delegation, according to a statement issued on Wednesday in Abuja.
The minister said the Federal Government had established frameworks to address long-standing paternity claims arising from past peacekeeping missions in Liberia and pledged transparent engagement to ensure their resolution.
Palma disclosed that 42 legacy cases were currently under review and sought Nigeria’s support in delivering justice and closure for affected individuals, some of whom had expressed interest in acquiring Nigerian citizenship.
Both parties agreed to strengthen collaboration through specialised training, workshops and capacity-building initiatives aimed at deepening human rights protection within the operational activities of the Armed Forces of Nigeria.
