The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has activated its emergency response operations to ensure prompt and effective responses to emergencies during the yuletide season and beyond.
The Director-General of NEMA, Mrs. Zubaida Umar, disclosed this on Saturday in Abuja at the conclusion of a fitness exercise by agency staff. She emphasised that the activation underscores the agency’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property across the country during periods of heightened activity and risk.
The fitness exercise involved a walk of approximately five kilometres and was designed to promote physical fitness, teamwork, and operational preparedness among staff. According to Mrs. Umar, maintaining a high level of readiness is essential for NEMA, given its role as a frontline agency in emergency coordination and disaster management.
“During festive periods, there is usually an increase in road accidents, fire outbreaks, and other emergencies. Our personnel must be physically fit, coordinated, and ready to respond at a moment’s notice,” she said.
She added that the exercise also fosters camaraderie among staff and reinforces the agency’s culture of discipline, resilience, and proactive engagement in line with its mandate.
NEMA’s activation of its emergency response operations comes as part of broader efforts to enhance disaster preparedness and ensure that the agency can swiftly respond to emergencies nationwide, particularly during the busy yuletide season when demand for emergency services tends to rise.
Mrs. Umar urged Nigerians to observe safety measures during the festive period, particularly on the roads, while assuring them that NEMA remains on alert to handle any emergencies effectively.
