Vice President Kashim Shettima on Thursday presided over the National Economic Council (NEC) meeting held at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, with governors of the 36 states, ministers, and other key stakeholders in attendance.
The meeting, which is the statutory platform for economic planning and coordination among federal and state governments, deliberated on pressing national issues, including revenue generation, fiscal stability, food security, and strategies to stimulate sustainable economic growth.
In his opening remarks, Vice President Shettima reiterated the federal government’s commitment to implementing policies that would cushion the effects of current economic challenges on Nigerians. He assured that President Bola Tinubu’s administration was determined to strengthen state-federal partnerships in driving reforms across sectors.
NEC also reviewed the state of the federation’s finances, disbursement from the Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC), and updates on the government’s social investment programmes. Governors used the opportunity to present reports from their states, particularly on agriculture, infrastructure, and security.
The council further discussed ways to boost internally generated revenue, enhance foreign exchange earnings, and support job creation initiatives nationwide.
The meeting comes at a time when the government is intensifying efforts to address inflation, tackle unemployment, and stabilize the naira. Analysts note that the outcomes of NEC’s resolutions will play a vital role in shaping economic recovery policies in the months ahead.
