The National Economic Council (NEC) has approved ₦83.21 billion for flood preparedness and climate related disaster mitigation across Nigeria ahead of the peak rainy season.
The approval was made during NEC’s 158th meeting in Abuja on Thursday, June 18, 2026, chaired by Vice President Kashim Shettima.
The funds will be released through the Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC) and used for early warning systems, emergency support, and interventions in vulnerable communities.
The approved amount represents half of the ₦166.42 billion initially proposed by the Anticipatory Action Task Force (AATF).
Speaking after the meeting, Cross River State Governor Bassey Otu said the council approved the reduced amount to balance urgent flood prevention needs with financial considerations. He added that further funding could be considered as the situation develops.
The Anticipatory Action Framework was created to shift Nigeria’s disaster response from reacting after floods occur to taking preventive measures before major impacts are recorded.
Officials warned that thousands of communities remain at risk during the June to October rainy season, with potential threats to homes, farmlands, infrastructure, and livelihoods.
Nigeria has experienced repeated flooding in recent years, resulting in displacement, destruction of property, and disruption of agricultural activities.
While some stakeholders welcomed the proactive approach, others argued that long-term solutions such as improved drainage systems, flood control infrastructure, and protection of waterways are also needed.
Authorities have urged residents in flood prone areas to follow warnings from relevant agencies and take precautionary measures as the rainy season continues.
