Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have intercepted over 1.5 million pills of Tramadol concealed in two trucks entering Nigeria through the Benin Republic border.
​The agency described the successful operation on Sunday, July 19, 2026, as another major blow to the backbone of transnational drug trafficking syndicates operating within the West African sub-region.
​According to an official statement released in Abuja by the NDLEA Director of Media and Advocacy, Femi Babafemi, the operation was the result of meticulous, intelligence-led surveillance.
​The two trucks, which originated from Togo, transited through the Benin Republic before attempting to cross into Nigeria. Acting on actionable intelligence, anti-narcotics officers intercepted the vehicles at the border point.
​”NDLEA operatives acting on intelligence have again intercepted two more of such trucks with the same mode of concealment coming through the same route,” Babafemi stated. “This time, the haul yielded over 1.5 million pills meant for delivery to the northern part of the country.”
​The syndicates utilized a highly sophisticated concealment method to evade routine border checks. The large cache of illicit opioids was hidden inside specially constructed false-bottom compartments welded with thick iron sheets underneath the belly of the trucks.
​This bust comes barely a week after a similar operation in Lagos, where NDLEA officers intercepted a truck carrying 558,900 pills of Tramadol (250mg) utilizing the exact same structural modifications. The agency noted that this latest seizure yielded three times the volume of the previous week’s bust, indicating an aggressive push by the cartels.
​The NDLEA has impounded the two trucks and taken the exhibits into custody. While the agency continues to track down the primary distributors and financiers behind the shipment, the leadership reiterated its total commitment to dismantling the supply chains of illicit substances nationwide.
