The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Sokoto/Zamfara Area Command, has reaffirmed its commitment to promoting legitimate cross-border trade while intensifying its crackdown on smuggling activities along routes linked to neighbouring countries.
The Command stated that it remains focused on facilitating lawful business operations across designated border posts in Sokoto and Zamfara states, while ensuring that illicit trade does not undermine national economic interests and security.
In a statement issued by the Area Command, officials emphasised that promoting legitimate commerce is critical to boosting revenue generation, strengthening regional economic integration, and supporting local businesses operating within the ambit of the law. The Command noted that officers have been directed to maintain professionalism and efficiency in processing goods and clearing consignments to ease trade for compliant importers and exporters.
At the same time, the Command reiterated that it would not tolerate smuggling or other unlawful activities along border corridors. It warned that smugglers exploiting porous routes to move prohibited items or evade duties would face strict enforcement measures, including seizures, arrests, and prosecution in accordance with extant laws.
The Sokoto/Zamfara Area Command highlighted the strategic importance of the region, which shares boundaries with neighbouring countries, making it both a vital trade gateway and a potential hotspot for illicit movements. To address this, the Command said it has strengthened surveillance operations, intensified patrols, and enhanced intelligence gathering to detect and intercept contraband.
Customs authorities further called on border communities and stakeholders to collaborate with the Service by providing credible information that could aid enforcement efforts. They stressed that community support remains crucial in curbing smuggling and safeguarding the nation’s economic stability.
The Command assured law-abiding traders of continued cooperation and transparency, pledging to strike a balance between trade facilitation and enforcement to ensure that economic growth is not compromised by illegal activities.
