Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Mrs. Oyinkansola Badejo-Okusanya, has forged a significant lead in the ongoing 2026 Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) presidential election. Emerging as the frontrunner, her early advantage follows a highly dramatic opening to the electronic poll, which was heavily disrupted by a coordinated cyberattack on the association’s voting infrastructure.
The national election, originally scheduled to commence precisely at 12:00 a.m. West African Time (WAT) on Saturday, July 18, 2026, was thrown into sudden uncertainty when external malicious actors targeted the online voting system.
In an emergency briefing, the Electoral Committee of the Nigerian Bar Association (ECNBA), led by Chairman Aham Ejelam, SAN, and Secretary Ibrahim Aliyu Nassarawa, Esq., confirmed that the platform faced a “deliberate, coordinated, and sustained cyberattack” designed to undermine the integrity of the ballot.
Following swift intervention by the ECNBA’s technical division and the Election Voting Service Provider (EVSP), the platform was successfully migrated to an emergency secured domain, with voting officially getting underway at 7:35 a.m. WAT. Due to the seven-and-a-half-hour delay, the electoral committee announced that the 24-hour voting window will be extended until 7:35 a.m. on Sunday, July 19, to guarantee every registered member has an equal opportunity to vote.
As official collation and live tracking continue, updated vote counts released at 6:00 p.m. WAT on Saturday indicate a substantial polling advantage for Mrs. Badejo-Okusanya, who is vying to lead the continent’s largest bar network.
Out of 21,665 ballots successfully cast by early evening (representing roughly 26.37% of the 82,164 registered legal practitioners), the vote breakdown stands as Mrs. Oyinkansola Badejo-Okusanya, SAN leads with 9,930 votes (45.82%), Lateef Omoyemi Akangbe, SAN with 6,708 votes (30.99%) and Aare Olumuyiwa Akinboro, SAN: 5,021 votes (23.21%)
”The ECNBA deeply appreciates the patience of all candidates, agents, and voters,” the electoral committee stated in an afternoon update. “Despite criminal interference, our commitment to a transparent, credible, and free election remains unshakeable.”
With over half of the registered national electorate still expected to log on through the night, voting remains highly competitive. The final winner will succeed the outgoing NBA Administration to direct the policy, judicial reform initiatives, and institutional governance of the Nigerian Bar Association for the next two years. Final certified tallies are expected to be announced by the ECNBA shortly after the extended voting portal closes on Sunday morning.
