The campaign to preserve Nigeria’s educational and cultural landmarks reached a decisive milestone this week as the National Commission for Museums and Monuments (NCMM) completed a four-day technical evaluation of Government College Umuahia (GCU) to grant the institution National Monument status.

The four-day assessment, which ran from August 1 to August 4, saw a federal delegation led by NCMM Director of Heritage Services, Mr. Abubakar Usman, inspect the school’s historical infrastructure.

The technical team evaluated the institution’s premier heritage assets—including the Assembly Hall, Administration Block, historic Library, and the original residential houses (Fisher, Niger, Nile, and Simpson)—evaluating their architectural integrity and cultural significance as the cradle of modern African literature.

The preservation effort was initiated and financed by the Government College Umuahia Old Boys Association (GCUOBA), Great Britain and Ireland Branch, under the leadership of Dr. Chidi Okorie, with broad backing from the global alumni network.

Speaking on the impact of the exercise, GCUOBA UK & Ireland representative Mr. Chukwudi Onwudinanti emphasized that the four-day review marks the first critical phase toward international heritage recognition.

”The commission undertook a comprehensive technical inspection of Government College Umuahia, examining the college’s outstanding educational, architectural, literary, and cultural heritage,” Onwudinanti stated. “This lays the groundwork for its eventual placement on Nigeria’s UNESCO World Heritage tentative list.”

GCUOBA National President, Dr. Chinedum Ahaiwe, commended the diaspora branch for spearheading the dossier, noting that official protection will permanently safeguard the legacy of an institution that nurtured literary titans such as Chinua Achebe, Elechi Amadi, and Gabriel Okara.

The four-day mission included key high-level stakeholder sessions across the state capital. Executive engagements were hosted by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Dr. Emmanuel Meribeole, representing Governor Alex Otti.

The state executive endorsed a phased designation process, advocating for GCU to first receive Abia State Monument status before transitioning to a Federal National Monument and UNESCO candidate.

The NCMM and alumni delegates met with the Joint Committee on Education and Culture at the Abia State House of Assembly Complex. Legislative leaders, including the Deputy Speaker and Chief Whip, committed to expediting state heritage protection bills to support the site.

With the assessment concluded, the NCMM is preparing its final technical synthesis report, moving Government College Umuahia one step closer to executive declaration as a protected national heritage site.
