Senator Orji Kalu, former governor of Abia State, has confirmed that the National Assembly committee tasked with harmonising the Electoral Act will meet today to finalise its decision on the proposed amendments. Kalu, who represents Abia North in the Senate, made the remarks on Tuesday during an interview on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily.
“Regarding the feedback from Nigerians about the Electoral Act amendment, I can tell you it is on track. We had an emergency sitting last week, and we are having another one today,” Kalu said. “We were originally supposed to resume on the 24th, possibly for budget hearings, but we have paused them to focus on the Electoral Committee.”
The lawmaker, who is a member of the Joint Harmonisation Committee, also shed light on the process, explaining the intensity of the work involved. “I was in the office from 11 a.m. until 8 p.m. When it was suggested we go to the Senate President’s house to harmonise our decision, I declined because I needed to eat and rest after a long day at the National Assembly,” he said.
Senator Kalu assured Nigerians that the harmonisation process is officially underway and that the committee’s decisions will be communicated soon. The development comes as the National Assembly intensifies efforts to finalise the Electoral Act amendment, a move aimed at addressing public concerns and ensuring smooth conduct of future elections.
