The national electricity grid has suffered another collapse, leaving many parts of the country in total darkness and compounding the woes of already struggling power consumers.
Reports from distribution companies on Tuesday confirmed the system failure, which occurred in the early hours of the day. Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) and Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) both issued notices to customers, attributing the outage to the nationwide grid collapse.
“We regret to inform our esteemed customers that the current power outage is due to a system collapse on the national grid,” EEDC stated in a message to consumers. “Our team is on standby, awaiting further directives on restoration.”
This latest incident adds to the long list of grid failures that have plagued Nigeria’s electricity supply system. According to industry data, the grid has collapsed multiple times in 2025 alone, highlighting the persistent instability of the country’s power infrastructure.
The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), which manages the national grid, is yet to issue an official statement on the cause of the breakdown. However, experts have long warned that the grid remains vulnerable due to poor maintenance, inadequate investment, and rising demand that often outpaces generation capacity.
The repeated collapses have fueled frustration among Nigerians who already contend with erratic electricity supply, high tariffs, and the soaring cost of alternative energy sources such as diesel and petrol for generators.
Power sector analysts say urgent reforms are needed to strengthen transmission infrastructure and ensure a more reliable supply. They warn that without significant investment and political will, the cycle of collapses may persist, further stifling economic growth and deepening public discontent.
