El-Rufai appeared at the Federal High Court in Kaduna for a scheduled hearing regarding his bail application. He was in court today for the continuation of his trial involving corruption-related charges filed by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC).
He had been briefly released on March 27 on compassionate grounds to attend his mother’s burial. Since the court has not yet granted him formal bail, he was taken back into the custody of the ICPC immediately following the proceedings.
The court has reportedly postponed the hearing on his bail application, meaning he will remain with the commission for the time being.
The ICPC’s case primarily revolves around allegations of financial misconduct during his tenure as Governor of Kaduna State (2015–2023). Specifically, the charges included allegations that he received inflated severance payments totaling approximately N579.7 million, far exceeding the statutory limit and charges related to the conversion of public property and money laundering.
So, while “security operatives” led him away, it was the standard procedure of returning a defendant to custody after a temporary release, rather than a fresh arrest for a new crime.
