IT is with a great sense of loss that I report the passage of my elder brother, Mr Trigo Egbegi who slept on the Lord this morning (Sunday) at 10:00am.
He called me on Friday to inform me of stomach ache that has been so painful. I joined him yesterday and stayed with him for the greater part of yesterday.
Though he was glaringly in pains, he was optimistic that it was going to alright as he attested to the efficacy of the first aid treatment.
We planned going to the hospital the following day if the pains persist.
There were no signs that it was going to be so severe. I promised to return later today to see him. His son, Kuro told me he even exchanged banters with neighbours who were going to church this morning.
What looked like a joke took a dramatic turn as he collapsed and couldn’t come back on his feet.
Trigo Egbegi was a celebrated sports journalist in his hey days as a sports reporter in Lagos.
He worked as Sports Editor with the National Concord, the Guardian, The Republic, Sports Link and later the Sportsworld.
His peak as a sports journalist was when he anchored the renowned TV show titled “Big Fights of the decade” on the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) where he captured the attention of Nigerians nationwide for one hour.
His career also made him travel widely interviewing boxing legends like the late Muhammad Ali, Hearns, Sugar Ray and other top boxing icons across the United States and other parts of of the world.
His death today closed yet another chapter of life.
May the good Lord grant him eternal rest.
