The match, played in Mexico on Thursday, saw goals from Julián Quiñones and Raúl Jiménez, while South Africa finished the game with nine players after receiving two red cards.
While the dramatic encounter generated plenty of football-related reactions online, a larger conversation quickly emerged as social media users from countries including Nigeria, Ghana and Kenya celebrated South Africa’s defeat. Many of the posts referenced longstanding grievances over xenophobic attacks against African migrants in South Africa, with some users describing their support for Mexico as a symbolic protest against what they termed Afrophobia.
Mexican flags, sombreros and the phrase “Viva Mexico” featured prominently in viral posts shared across X, TikTok, Instagram and Facebook. The online reactions ranged from light-hearted football banter to more serious commentary on relations between South Africa and other African nations.
Some users posted dancing videos and celebratory messages following the result, while others circulated memes mocking South Africa’s defeat and disciplinary troubles during the match. The trend gained further momentum as compilations of reactions and edited videos spread across social media platforms. However, the celebrations also sparked debate among Africans online.
While some argued that South Africa’s past treatment of African migrants justified the reactions, others called for greater continental solidarity, insisting that football should unite rather than divide Africans. South African users also pushed back against the criticism, leading to exchanges over xenophobia, migration and African identity.
As discussions continue on social media, the Mexico-South Africa match has become one of the tournament’s earliest viral moments. Beyond the result on the pitch, the reactions have highlighted how football can amplify wider social and political issues, turning a World Cup fixture into a broader conversation about unity, migration and relations among African nations.
