Nigeria’s ambassador-designate to Mexico, Reno Omokri, has strongly dismissed insinuations that Mexicans are transforming Nigeria into a drug hub, describing the narrative as unfounded and warning that such labels harm vital bilateral relations.
Speaking on Tuesday, July 14, 2026, Omokri responded directly to growing concerns raised by journalists regarding potential illicit networks between the two countries. The diplomat firmly rejected these fears, urging the public and media to look at the broader economic reality rather than isolated criminal activities.
”There is no truth to such insinuations,” Omokri declared. “Yes, there have been isolated cases involving some individuals, and I think that in our fifty years of bilateral relations with the United United Mexican States, such a thing had only happened twice. This indicates that the unfortunate cases were isolated incidents.”
Omokri emphasized that neither the Nigerian nor the Mexican government has any intention of shielding lawbreakers. However, he warned against “tarring all citizens” with the same brush, as it directly damages legitimate businesses.
He further highlighted a significant disparity in the diaspora demographics between both nations, pointing out that Mexico treats Nigerian citizens with a high degree of prudence.
There are currently about 50,000 Nigerian citizens residing in Mexico, compared to just 500 Mexicans living in Nigeria.
Omokri noted that while some Nigerians have run afoul of the law in Mexico, the Mexican government has wisely refrained from defining its entire bilateral relationship with Nigeria based on those separate incidents.
The ambassador-designate reminded Nigerians of Mexico’s massive economic footprint and its strategic importance to Nigeria’s trade balance.
Mexico boasts a $2 trillion economy, ranking as the 13th largest economy on Earth. Trade between the two countries spans decades and historically favors Nigeria by a 3-to-1 ratio.
Omokri concluded by calling on the Nigerian media to be mindful of the geopolitical implications of mislabeling a historically benevolent partner, stating that undermining ties with a $2 trillion economy is counterproductive to Nigeria’s long-term economic visions.
