In a historic move, First Lady Melania Trump is scheduled to preside over a United Nations Security Council (UNSC) meeting on Monday, March 2, 2026.
This marks the first time in history that a first lady or any spouse of a serving world leaderhas ever presided over the 15-member council. The opportunity arises as the United States takes over the rotating monthly presidency of the Security Council for March.
“Children, Technology, and Education in Conflict.”
The First Lady’s office stated the session will emphasize the role of education in advancing tolerance and global peace.
UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric noted that while spouses have participated in the UN before, none have held the gavel or chaired a formal council session.
The meeting aligns with her “Fostering the Future” initiative, which focuses on youth empowerment and education. It also follows her advocacy for the return of children displaced by the Russia-Ukraine war.
While several U.S. first ladies have engaged with the United Nations, their roles have historically been diplomatic or advisory rather than presiding over the Security Council.
