I recently drove past Ughelli on my way to Asaba and was impressed with the remodelled roundabout of Ughelli designed by Mudi Africa aka Mudiaga . The space now carries identity, pride, and a bold African signature. It’s the kind of work that makes you slow down, not just for traffic, but to appreciate beauty.
This is amazing. He is a designer, interior decorator and sculpture expert who turns ordinary places into statements. His touch is not just in structures, but in the feeling people get when they experience his work.
Last weekend I met him to ask what motivates him. What pushes a man to keep creating at that level when most people settle?
I kicked off the new week with a truly heartwarming, emotional conversation with the remarkable Mudi Africa, a leading creative force and interior decorator in Africa. Before we talked about projects, he wanted to know how I was doing after my recent knee cap operation. That care, that humanity, is part of why his work connects.
After our chat, I couldn’t help but ask him about the secret behind his incredible journey — from humble beginnings to establishing a stunning and iconic studio office in Africa. How does one go from nothing to building something that stands out?
His response was nothing short of inspiring:
“Have faith in God and dream BIG! Ask God largely and refuse to settle for mediocrity. Surround yourself with successful role models who encourage you to think HIGH RISE!”
Mudi spoke about the visionary leaders who inspire him — Tony Elumelu, Jim Ovia, Chief Nduka Obaigbena, and John Momoh — all of whom have transformed their industries and built multimillion-naira and dollar empires. He doesn’t just admire them. He studies their mindset of excellence and execution.
