The promoter of Edo Nigeria’s Construction Site, John Mayaki, has commended Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, for undertaking the funding of a 28.2-kilometre portion of the Benin–Sapele–Warri Road, describing the intervention as timely and critical to economic activities in the region.
Mayaki made the remarks after visiting the project site to assess the level of work completed, where he also dispelled claims that the Federal Ministry of Works was funding the reconstruction. According to him, the ongoing reconstruction is solely financed by the administration of Governor Okpebholo.
He contrasted the current development with what he described as the situation under the past administration of Godwin Obaseki, which he alleged did not sufficiently collaborate with the Federal Government to address the condition of the road despite the challenges faced by motorists on the route.
Speaking after inspecting the project, Mayaki praised the governor for what he described as proactive leadership and commitment to infrastructure development. He noted that the governor had on several occasions personally monitored and inspected the project to ensure that the contractor delivers within record time and in line with quality standards.
Mayaki explained that during his inspection, he assessed the entire stretch of the road project, beginning from the flyover under construction on Sapele Road to Santana Market, extending through the RCC axis and the Ogheghe bypass, and terminating at the Ologbo–Koko junction.
The Benin–Sapele–Warri Road is considered one of the most important transport corridors in the South-South region, linking Edo and Delta states and serving as a major route for the movement of goods, petroleum products, and passengers. The road has suffered years of deterioration, causing hardship for commuters, transporters, and businesses operating along the corridor.
According to Mayaki, the reconstruction of the 28.2-kilometre portion of the road will significantly reduce travel time, improve road safety, and boost economic activities in communities along the route. He added that traders, transport operators, and residents in the area are expected to benefit from the improved road network once the project is completed.
He further stated that infrastructure development remains a key driver of economic growth, noting that good road networks help to attract investment, improve trade, and enhance connectivity between cities and rural communities.
Residents and road users in the area have reportedly expressed relief over the ongoing reconstruction, as the road had previously been associated with frequent accidents, vehicle breakdowns, and heavy traffic congestion.
Mayaki reiterated his commendation for Monday Okpebholo, urging continued monitoring of the project to ensure timely completion and adherence to quality standards. He expressed optimism that the project would be completed within schedule and would bring long-term benefits to the people of Edo State and neighboring states that rely on the road for transportation and commerce.
The reconstruction of the Benin–Sapele–Warri Road is expected to play a significant role in improving transportation in the region, easing the movement of goods and services, and supporting economic development across Edo and Delta states.
